How Accommodation Demand Changed in Wayanad: From Simple Rooms to Private Pool Villas

Wayanad’s tourism industry has changed dramatically over the last two decades.The way travellers choose accommodation today is very different from what guests were looking for in the early 2000s. From basic rooms and small resorts to swimming pools, campfires, unique stays, homestays and now private pool villas, the accommodation market in Wayanad has continuously evolved with changing traveller expectations.Having been part of the hospitality industry in Wayanad for many years, we have had the opportunity to observe these changes closely.Here is a look at how accommodation demand in Wayanad has evolved over the years.

2000–2006: When Accommodation Was Limited

In the early 2000s, Wayanad was already attracting tourists, but the number of accommodation options was relatively small.Around 2000–2006, travellers looking for comfortable accommodation often had only a limited number of premium hotels and established resorts to choose from.There were also a number of small, independent accommodation properties beginning to appear.This was the period when properties such as small plantation resorts, homestays and independent cottages started developing in different parts of Wayanad.The idea was simple: provide travellers with a comfortable place to stay while allowing them to experience Wayanad’s natural surroundings.It was during this period that Wayanad Lakeshore Resort also began its journey.

Around 2010: Swimming Pools Became a Major Attraction

As the number of accommodation properties increased, guest expectations also started changing.By around 2010, a swimming pool had become an increasingly important feature for many travellers.Guests were no longer looking only for a room and a good location. They wanted something more to enjoy during their stay.Resorts with swimming pools began attracting more attention, particularly among families, groups and leisure travellers.The pool itself became part of the holiday experience.This also encouraged more property owners and investors to develop accommodation properties with additional recreational facilities.

The Rise of BBQs and Campfires

After swimming pools became popular, another trend gradually became an important part of the Wayanad stay experience: BBQ and campfire evenings.For many travellers, especially groups and families, an evening around a campfire became an enjoyable part of their holiday.BBQ facilities, outdoor seating and campfire areas started becoming common features in resorts and homestays.The accommodation market was no longer simply about providing a bed for the night.The experience surrounding the stay was becoming equally important.

More Rooms, More Competition

As tourism in Wayanad continued to grow, more accommodation properties entered the market.Small resorts, homestays, cottages and guesthouses started appearing across different tourism destinations.This was good for travellers because they had more choices.But it also changed the competitive environment for accommodation providers.Having rooms alone was no longer enough.Properties increasingly needed to offer something different — better facilities, better surroundings, better experiences or better value.

The Search for Unique Stays

Over the years, travellers began looking beyond conventional hotel rooms.They started looking for accommodation that itself could become part of the holiday experience.This created demand for unique stays such as:

* Tree houses

* Plantation cottages

* Nature stays

* Traditional homes

* Boutique cottages

* Forest and hillside stays

* Private and secluded properties

The location and surroundings became increasingly important. Travellers wanted to wake up surrounded by greenery, enjoy a view, experience nature and feel that they were staying somewhere different from an ordinary hotel.

Airbnb and the Growth of Homestays

Another major change came with the growth of online accommodation platforms, particularly Airbnb.As Airbnb began focusing more on destinations such as Wayanad, many homestay and independent property owners received an opportunity to reach travellers directly.A small property that previously depended mainly on local references or travel agents could now present its rooms and experiences to travellers from different parts of India and even overseas.For many property owners, this opened a completely new market.Good photography, reviews, hospitality and a unique property experience became powerful marketing tools.The growth of Airbnb also encouraged many homeowners and small property owners to enter the accommodation business.

Social Media Changed the Game Again

Then came another major change: social media marketing.Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and travel blogs changed the way people discovered accommodation.A beautiful property could suddenly attract attention simply because a photograph or video went viral.Young entrepreneurs began creating travel pages, Instagram accounts and small travel agencies focused specifically on destinations such as Wayanad.Many of them started promoting villas, homestays and private properties directly to travellers.Interestingly, this market has also created opportunities for many women entrepreneurs and travel agents who are now actively involved in promoting Wayanad stays and holiday experiences.The traditional travel agency model has changed.Today, a person with a smartphone, social-media page and good network can become an important link between travellers and accommodation providers.

2026: The Rise of Private Pool Properties

Now, in 2026, we are seeing another significant shift in guest preferences.One of the strongest demands we are observing in the market is for private pool accommodation.And this demand is not limited to honeymoon couples.Families, groups of friends, bachelor groups, small celebrations and travellers simply looking for privacy are increasingly interested in properties where the swimming pool is exclusively available to their group.Why is privacy becoming so important?

Travellers today often want to spend quality time together without sharing common facilities with other guests.A private villa with its own pool offers:Privacy + comfort + exclusivity + a complete holiday experience.

Instead of booking a room in a large resort and sharing the swimming pool with other guests, a group can stay together in one private property and enjoy the facilities exclusively.This is particularly attractive for families and groups.Small Private Villas Are Becoming CompetitiveAnother interesting development is the growth of individually operated private villas.Some property owners are developing villas on relatively small plots of land with facilities such as:

* Private swimming pools

* Bedrooms

* Living areas

* Outdoor seating

* BBQ facilities

* Parking

* Garden spaces

These properties can sometimes be operated with only a caretaker or a small team.For owners, this can mean a simpler operating model compared with running a conventional resort with multiple departments and a larger staff.

For travellers, it creates another accommodation choice between a hotel and a large resort.This has made the private-villa segment increasingly competitive.Wayanad’s Accommodation Market Keeps Evolving

Our Next Step: A Private Pool Villa at Wayanad Lakeshore Resort

After studying these changing trends and listening to what travellers are looking for today, we decided to make an important addition to Wayanad Lakeshore Resort.We are currently converting one of our spacious villas into a private pool villa.The idea is to combine the space and comfort of a villa with the privacy of an exclusive swimming pool.Rather than creating just another accommodation unit, our goal is to create a stay where the villa itself becomes the experience.

We are currently working on the project, and there are several stages still to complete.We will be sharing the progress as the work moves forward — from the initial renovation and pool construction to the interiors, landscaping and final setup.

Follow the Journey This is not just a renovation project for us.It is our response to how the Wayanad accommodation market is changing.The expectations of travellers have changed many times over the last 20 years, and we believe the next chapter is going to be increasingly focused on privacy, experiences and personalised stays.We are excited to see how our new private pool villa takes shape.We will keep updating this blog with the progress.Wayanad Lakeshore Resort – A Coffee Plantation Experience
